Glow-Wire Test Apparatus

Glow-Wire Test Apparatus

Glow-wire test apparatus measuring the flammability of solid insulating materials, using a nickel/chrome (80/20) wire up to 960 °C in accordance with TS EN 60695-2-10.

Description

Performs the glow-wire test applied to specimens of solid electrical insulating materials or other solid materials; used for determining the glow-wire ignition temperature (GWIT).

Glow Wire

  • Material: Nickel/chrome (80/20) wire
  • Nominal diameter: 4 mm (overall)
  • Form: Loop as shown in TS EN 60695-2-10 Figure 1
  • Heating: Simple electrical circuit as shown in TS EN 60695-2-10 Figure 2; no feedback mechanism or circuit is used to maintain the temperature
  • Typical current: 120–150 A to heat the wire tip to 960 °C

Test Arrangement

The apparatus holds the specimen in a horizontal plane while the glow wire is applied. Components: burner, steel carrier, specimen clamping arrangement, butane/propane gas cylinder and connecting hose, wooden board and paper, flame height measuring arrangement, flame verification arrangement.
